Understanding Personal Injury Doctor — No Upfront Cost

“No upfront cost” generally describes the timing or source of payment, not free medical care and not a promise that every patient qualifies. Depending on the case and the practice’s policies, care may be billed to health insurance, an auto-medical benefit, workers’ compensation, or provided under an authorized lien or letter of protection connected to a personal-injury claim. The patient should receive a clear explanation of responsibility for charges if coverage is denied, the claim ends, or a recovery is insufficient.

A law firm may refer an injured client for evaluation, but the attorney does not select the diagnosis or direct clinical recommendations. The clinician documents the history, examination, testing, treatment, attendance, and response to care. With the patient’s authorization, the practice can coordinate appointments and records with the referring firm. Questions about fault, claim value, settlement, or legal strategy remain with the attorney, while questions about symptoms and treatment remain with the medical team.

Bring the accident date, claim and insurer details, prior medical records, medication information, and the referring law firm’s contact information. Ask billing staff to identify the proposed arrangement in writing, including how records fees, imaging, procedures, outside services, and missed appointments are handled. Do not delay emergency care while trying to establish a lien or other payment arrangement; emergencies require appropriate immediate medical attention.
