Payment arrangements for accident-related care depend on the patient’s coverage, the type and status of the claim, the services being considered, and the practice’s current administrative policies. A payment plan, insurance claim, workers’ compensation authorization, medical lien, and letter of protection are different arrangements. Patients should ask which option is actually being proposed, who remains responsible for the balance, when payment is due, and what happens if a claim is denied or a settlement does not cover the full amount.
Before treatment begins, provide accurate insurance information, claim numbers when available, and the contact information for the law firm that referred the patient. The practice may need written authorization to communicate with an insurer, employer, or attorney. Administrative approval does not determine which treatment is medically appropriate, and a clinical recommendation does not guarantee that a payer or claim will cover it. Request written terms and keep copies of estimates, notices, receipts, and signed agreements.
